Role Overview
The Director of Summer Camp/Lead Counselor at Wild Roots Montessori School plays a pivotal role in designing and leading an enriching summer program that reflects the school’s commitment to outdoor education, child-centered learning, and environmental stewardship. This individual ensures a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate camp experience for children, fostering creativity, resilience, and a love for nature.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership and Development

Design and implement a Montessori-inspired summer camp curriculum that includes outdoor adventures, environmental science, arts and crafts, and team-building activities.

Plan daily schedules, balancing structured activities and unstructured exploration time to support child development and engagement.

Align activities with Wild Roots Montessori’s pillars of positive outdoor experiences, hands-on learning, and environmental stewardship.
Team Management

Supervise camp counselors, ensuring they follow basic Montessori principles while upholding safety and educational standards.

Provide mentorship and support to staff, fostering a collaborative and enthusiastic team environment.
Child Supervision and Safety

Act as the primary point of contact for children and families during the summer program, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of all campers during activities, field trips, and transitions.

Maintain compliance with health and safety standards, including first aid protocols and emergency procedures.
Parent Communication and Engagement

Be present at drop-off and pickup times to check in with parents, greet children, and provide updates or address questions.

Serve as the liaison between camp staff and parents, providing regular updates on activities, addressing concerns, and sharing successes.
Operational Management

Oversee the use of resources, materials, and outdoor equipment, ensuring they are properly maintained and available for activities.

Manage the summer camp budget and track expenses to align with financial goals.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development, Outdoor Leadership, or a related field (preferred).

Experience in leading summer camps, outdoor education, or similar child-centered programs.

Knowledge of Montessori principles and practices (preferred but not required; training provided).

Strong leadership and team management skills.

CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before the start of camp).
